Welcome to Aqua-Center, a new established center at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) within the
School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD).
The center is basically a hub with a goal of improving livelihoods of the people especially that of rural and
disadvantaged communities through agriculture / aquaculture development. Our major objectives are to help
improve agricultural productivity thereby improve food and nutrition security, create employment and increase
income. These objectives are achieved through conducting research, sharing outcomes, transferring
technologies, organizing need-based training to develop skills, organizing demonstration, and many other
In addition to teaching and learning at AIT, our team has designed and implemented various community
development projects in various countries including Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Vietnam
and other countries utilizing various donors funds such as ADB, CIDA, DANIDA, DFID, EU, SIDA, USAID,
While involving in teaching and learning process as well as the community development projects, we have felt
dire need of skillful and experienced leaders in order to be able to help the people who are in need.
Therefore, we designed and offered various customized Aquaculture training courses since 2010 or even
before. Since 2010, we have trained more than 300 professionals including new career building students,
youths, and also farmers or farm managers themselves. More importantly, we were able to attract high ranking
government officials, and senior executives of private organizations. They came pre-dominantly from Asia and
Africa countries but considerable numbers were from developed world such as Australia, Europe and North
agriculture. Therefore, we have developed and offered training programs. For examples, tropical agriculture,
commercial vegetable farming, value chain in agriculture, organic farming, aquaponics, farm planning and
designing, and various low-cost farming techniques. Our training program consists of classroom seminar,
interactions with participants, practical workshops, hands-on practice, field visits and study tours. We also

Symposium on Aquaculture and Fisheries Education (ISAFE) was during 27 - 30 November 2009. More
